Talcum Powder Attorneys | RI & CT Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits
WE ARE CURRENTLY REVIEWING CLAIMS OF RHODE ISLAND AND CONNECTICUT INDIVIDUALS WHO DEVELOPED MESOTHELIOMA OR OVARIAN CANCER AFTER USING TALCUM POWDER OR OTHER TALCUM BASED PRODUCTS
For decades, talcum powder, or “talc,” has been used by millions to combat such issues such as excessive moisture, sweat, and skin itchiness. Often referred to as “baby powder,” talc was touted by its manufacturers as a safe and effective hygiene product and was specifically marketed for use by woman and young children. However, studies over the years have shown that consistent use of talc may lead to severe health complications such as ovarian cancer, mesothelioma, and other medical problems.
As far back as the 1970s, companies like Johnson & Johnson were aware of the dangers talc posed due to potential asbestos contamination. A report published in 2018 indicated that Johnson & Johnson was aware of trace amounts of asbestos contained in their popular product. Then in October of 2019 Johnson & Johnson issued a recall of their talcum powder due to potential asbestos contamination before discontinuing its sale for good in May of 2020.
On May 19th 2020, Johnson and Johnson announced that it will discontinue making its baby powder products due to a decline in sales and mounting lawsuits.
There has been a recent groundswell of lawsuits filed nationwide claiming that talcum powder manufacturers knew about the risks of ovarian cancer and mesothelioma associated with the use of their products, yet failed to inform the public. Many of these products are still readily available for sale and use without any type of warning. Here at Marin and Barrett, Inc., our Connecticut and Rhode Island Talcum Powder Lawyers help those injured by talcum based products recover compensation for the problems they have caused. Tragically, many of those harmed by these products have suffered with ovarian cancer or mesothelioma after repeated use of talcum powder.

Talcum Powder Lawsuit Information
TALCUM POWDER USE AND CANCER - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Talcum powder is a product that consists of several different chemicals that, when combined together, create a powder that is both absorbent and deodorant, and can reduce friction between skin and clothing. This powder is sold over the counter as a topical treatment for itchiness, rash, and excess moisture of the skin, as well as for use with diapers, sanitary napkins, and feminine hygiene products. While talcum powder is certainly effective for those treatments and has sold well for decades, its continued use on or near the genitals can lead to dangerous and sometimes fatal health complications.
"Genital use of talc, either alone or in combination with body use, was associated with elevated epithelial ovarian cancer risk" according to a 2016 Harvard Medical School research article
Scientists and medical professionals have been researching the links between talcum powder usage and cancers for decades. While the research is ongoing and the results are mixed, some of the figures are alarming. In studies connecting the use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer, it is suspected that talc applied near the vagina either topically or via a contraceptive device can travel through the uterus and fallopian tubes to the ovaries. Over extended periods of use the talc can build up internally creating conditions such as tissue inflammation that can lead to the formation of cancerous cells and tumors.
CANCER CAUSING CARCINOGENS FOUND IN TALCUM POWDER
Many trusted medical and infectious disease organizations warn of the extended use of talcum powder and the associated cancer risks. The American Cancer Society suggests that the use of a talcum powder may present a heightened risk of ovarian cancer amongst users, while the World Health Organization considers talc to be a potentially cancer-causing carcinogen.
Feminine hygiene use of talcum powder was associated with a "20 to 30 percent increased risk in developing ovarian cancer" according to a study of over 8,525 cases published in Cancer Prevention Research
OVARIAN CANCER CASES LINKED TO THE USE OF TALCUM POWDER
The studies between the use of talc and ovarian cancer date as far back as 1971, but have started to yield particularly troubling data within the last decade. A 2016 study spearheaded by a Harvard epidemiologist found that women who used talcum powder had nearly double the risk of ovarian cancer when compared to non-users. Another 2016 study found that African-American women who used the powder frequently faced an ovarian cancer risk up to 44% higher than those that did not use talc. Two additional studies showed heightened risks of 33% and 20-30% of ovarian cancer in talc users.
Given the difficult in tracing its routes and the different ways it can affect those afflicted, cancer is incredibly difficult to research. Like any other scientific or medical field, every set of research has its own detractors, and talc is no different. Johnson & Johnson and other manufacturers have continuously denied that their products are unsafe to use as directed. But what is clear is that there is enough of a link between talc usage and ovarian cancer and mesothelioma that lawsuits have started to pop up nationwide – many with great success.

TALCUM POWDER INJURY LAWSUITS
With so many instances of ovarian cancer, fallopian cancer, and mesothelioma attributed to the use of talcum powder, thousands of injured plaintiffs across the country have filed lawsuits. These plaintiffs are seeking damages for their medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. In the most tragic of cases loved ones are filing wrongful death claims on behalf of relatives who died as a result of talcum powder related injuries. The lawsuits have been filed primarily against Johnson & Johnson, but other defendants nationwide include: Colgate-Palmolive; Imerys Talc North America; Gold Bond; Nivea; McKesson; and Valeant Pharmaceuticals.
Recent Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer Verdicts
On July 12th, 2018, a St. Louis jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $4.69 billion in damages to 22 women and their families based on their use of baby powder and its link to ovarian cancer.
On August 21st, 2017, a Los Angeles jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $417 million to a 52 year old woman that had used their baby powder on her genitals for more than 40 years and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Currently there are over 16,000 lawsuits pending in a single federal jurisdiction and hundreds more filed in state courts nationwide. While many of these lawsuits are in the various stages of litigation, many have already been decided in favor of injured plaintiffs. While not every case us ultimately successful, many of the cases where the companies are found to be liable come with incredibly high damage awards. In 2016, three separate juries awarded damages in the amounts of $72 million, $70 million, and $55 million to three different plaintiffs in talc cases. The following year a jury awarded $110 million to another woman who had suffered catastrophic health problems after using talcum powder.
Over 16,000 talcum powder lawsuits nationwide
The injuries are catastrophic and the verdicts nationwide speak volumes about the manufacturers and their liability. Many cases wind up settling prior to trial and include non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements that prohibit releasing the dollar amounts. Many other cases wind up going to trial and reaching a jury verdict.
In addition to awards for individuals who have developed ovarian cancer, many current lawsuits have claimed that plaintiffs have contracted mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos-contaminated talc. As recently as two years ago juries awarded over $153 million dollars to plaintiffs who suffered from mesothelioma as a result of frequent talc use. In 2019, a jury in New Jersey found for plaintiffs who were alleged to have developed mesothelioma after repeated exposure to Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder; the jury awarded them $37.2 million.
In May of 2019 a Jury Awarded a NY Woman $25 Million in Compensatory Damages and $300 Million in Punitive Damages because Johnson & Johnson Asbestos-Contaminated Talcum Powder and Baby Powder Caused Her to Develop Mesothelioma
The companies that make these products fight tooth and nail every step of the way to avoid liability, bad publicity, and legal costs. Notwithstanding the science linking its product to cancer and mesothelioma to such a level that they fully discontinued their baby powder in May of 2020, Johnson & Johnson still insists that the product is safe to use.
Johnson & Johnson to End Talc-Based Baby Powder Sales in North America
The company has faced thousands of lawsuits from cancer patients who claim that its talc was contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen, and that the company knew of the risks
