Currently there are over 16,000 lawsuits pending in a single federal jurisdiction and hundreds more filed in state courts nationwide. While many of these lawsuits are in the various stages of litigation, many have already been decided in favor of injured plaintiffs. While not every case us ultimately successful, many of the cases where the companies are found to be liable come with incredibly high damage awards. In 2016, three separate juries awarded damages in the amounts of $72 million, $70 million, and $55 million to three different plaintiffs in talc cases. The following year a jury awarded $110 million to another woman who had suffered catastrophic health problems after using talcum powder.
Over 16,000 talcum powder lawsuits nationwide
The injuries are catastrophic and the verdicts nationwide speak volumes about the manufacturers and their liability. Many cases wind up settling prior to trial and include non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements that prohibit releasing the dollar amounts. Many other cases wind up going to trial and reaching a jury verdict.
In addition to awards for individuals who have developed ovarian cancer, many current lawsuits have claimed that plaintiffs have contracted mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos-contaminated talc. As recently as two years ago juries awarded over $153 million dollars to plaintiffs who suffered from mesothelioma as a result of frequent talc use. In 2019, a jury in New Jersey found for plaintiffs who were alleged to have developed mesothelioma after repeated exposure to Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder; the jury awarded them $37.2 million.
In May of 2019 a Jury Awarded a NY Woman $25 Million in Compensatory Damages and $300 Million in Punitive Damages because Johnson & Johnson Asbestos-Contaminated Talcum Powder and Baby Powder Caused Her to Develop Mesothelioma
The companies that make these products fight tooth and nail every step of the way to avoid liability, bad publicity, and legal costs. Notwithstanding the science linking its product to cancer and mesothelioma to such a level that they fully discontinued their baby powder in May of 2020, Johnson & Johnson still insists that the product is safe to use.

The company has faced thousands of lawsuits from cancer patients who claim that its talc was contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen, and that the company knew of the risks
