One of the First RI Zantac Lawsuits Filed by Man Diagnosed with Bladder Cancer

Earlier this year, a Rhode Island man became one of the first individuals to file a lawsuit alleging that his use of Zantac over a five year period resulted in his bladder cancer diagnosis in October of 2019. Specifically, the complaint alleges that the Zantac he ingested was contaminated with N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) which, based on the prevailing scientific evidence, can cause bladder cancer in humans.

According to the complaints alleged in the Zantac lawsuit, the plaintiff alleged that he did not learn about the link between Zantac and bladder cancer until weeks before his diagnosis in September of 2019 when he saw a news article that was published indicating that high levels of NDMA had been found in Zantac medication. Although the Food and Drug Administration had found that Zantac contained a safe level of NDMA of 96 ng, testing that had been conducted by an independent Connecticut pharmacy Valisure detected that Zantac contamination may expose users to more than 3,000,000 ng per 150 mg pill of Zantac.

The full forty page complaint can be found here: Lane v. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island on February 28th, 2020. The case is one of dozens of Zantac lawsuits filed in 2020 involving former users who indicate that they have been diagnosed with cancer following years of exposure to ranitidine. Plaintiffs in these lawsuits have also been diagnosed with stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer as well as other types of cancers of the digestive tract.

This Rhode Island Zantac lawsuit, along with others from around the entire country filed in the Federal Court system, have been ordered to be centralized and consolidated in the U.S. District for the Southern District of Florida by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. In the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida coordinated discovery and pretrial proceedings are being overseen by U.S. District Judge Robin L. Rosenberg.
