A) Maculopathy / macular retinopathy
B) Age-related macular degeneration
C) Retinal dystrophy
D) Other retinal conditions
WHAT IS ELMIRON?
Elmiron, or pentosan polysulfate sodium, is an oral prescription drug used to treat discomfort or bladder pain associated with interstitial cystitis, or IC, a chronic condition that causes bladder pain and pressure. The most common side effects of Elmiron are hair loss, diarrhea and nausea. Occasionally, headache, abdominal pain, and upset stomach may occur.
NEW STUDIES LINK ELMIRON TO A VISION-THREATENING EYE CONDITION
First reported in the American Academy of Opthalmology, new studies have provided evidence linking the common bladder medication Elmiron to a vision-threatening eye condition. The most recent study conducted by three ophthalmologists involved a review of patients at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. The study revealed that one-quarter of patients with significant exposure to Elmiron showed definite signs of eye damage, and that the medication toxicity could masquarate as other known retinal conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration or pattern dystrophy.

WHO MAKES ELMIRON?
Janssen Pharmaceuticals manufactures Elmiron and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration originally approved it for sale in 1996. It is currently the only oral drug approved to treat bladder pain and discomfort associated with IC (interstitial cystitis), and it is not available in generic. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people have used Elmiron and that most users are women. Other defendants have been included in the recent Elmiron Lawsuits including:
- Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.;
- Bayer Corporation;
- Bayer Healthcare LLC
- Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc.;

CAN A ELMIRON ATTORNEY HELP ME WITH A LAWSUIT IF I HAVE SUFFERED VISION LOSS OR EYE DAMAGE AFTER ELMIRON USE?
If you or a loved one suffered vision loss or eye damage after taking Elmiron you may have a lawsuit. You may be entitled to financial compensation for damages, including:
- Past, present, and future medical expenses
- Lost wages and lost earning potential
- Pain and suffering
- Compensation for loss of vision
- Loss of consortium
- Punitive damages, if appropriate
Unfortunately, many thought taking Elmiron was a safe and effective way to treat their IC. Elmiron’s medication insert did not include any warning regarding eye damage or an increased risk of eye disease until Janssen added a warning about pigmentary maculopathy in June 0f 2020. For this reason, the Elmiron Lawsuits seek compensation and relief for those suffering from vision problems including blurred vision, maculopathy, retinopathy, and vision impairment.
