WHAT IS BELVIQ (LORCASERIN)?

Originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012, Belviq (lorcaserin) is a weight loss drug marketed as a treatment to adult obesity when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. Belviq and Belviq XR act as a serotonin 2c receptor agonist and works as a weight loss stimulant by reducing appetite and increasing the feelings of fullness and satiety. In addition to use as a weight loss supplement, Belviq was prescribed to overweight and obese individuals to treat health issues associated with weight-related health issues such as hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes.

Belviq and the extended release version Belviq XR are manufactured by Arena Pharmaceuticals Gmbh in Switzerland and distributed and marketed by Eisai Incorporated out of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. When the FDA approved Belviq (lorcaserin) it required the manufacturer to conduct its own double-blind study to determine the safety and efficacy of the drug and evaluate any connections with cardiovascular issues. The randomized, double-blind clinical trial took place with 12,000 obese patients over a five-year study period. While the study found no significant link between use of the drug and cardiovascular complications, it did reveal a link between Belviq use and an increased risk of developing cancer. In the five-year, double-blind study, those taking the prescription drugs Belviq/Belviq XR were more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than those taking a placebo (sugar pill).

On February 13th, 2020, the FDA requested that Arena Phamaceuticals conduct a voluntary recall of Belviq and Belviq extended-release form from the U.S. market due to clinical trials showing a potential cancer link. Long-term use of Belviq frequently resulted in pancreatic, colon cancer, breast cancer, brain cancer and lung cancers in the clinical trial.

LORCASERIN VOLUNTARILY RECALLED IN FEBRUARY 2020 – DOES BELVIQ CAUSE CANCER?

In January 2020, after reviewing the results of the study, the FDA announced that users of the weight loss drug Belviq may face an increased risk of developing cancer. The study found that 462 participants in the study using Belviq developed cancer (at a rate of 7.7%), versus 423 from the placebo-controlled group (a rate of 7.1%). Specifically, Lorcaserin’s cancer risks were associated with a range of cancer types, including:

  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • Pancreatic Cancer

Shortly after announcing its findings the FDA requested that Belviq (lorcaserin) be immediately withdrawn from the market; the drug manufacturer Eisai, Inc. thereafter submitted a request to voluntarily withdraw the medicine from the market. In addition to the Eisai, Inc. withdrawal, the FDA recommended that doctors stop prescribing lorcaserin and that patients stop taking the drug immediately and dispose of the remainder of the drug at a designated drug disposal location or do so properly in their own homes. Letters notifying potential patients and healthcare providers were sent out shortly falling the FDA announcement.
